Hot Stamped B-Pillar Reinforcement with Tailored Properties

Our B-pillar reinforcements represent the state of the art in hot stamped safety components. Using advanced tailored tempering technology, we produce B-pillars with different strength zones along their length—creating an upper section that resists intrusion and a lower section that deforms in a controlled manner to absorb side impact energy.

Tailored Property Design

A conventional B-pillar made from uniformly hardened boron steel would be too rigid in the lower section, transmitting impact forces directly to the occupant. Our tailored property design solves this through controlled cooling rates:

• Upper Zone (Martensitic): Rapid quenching creates full martensitic microstructure with 1500MPa tensile strength, providing maximum intrusion resistance in the critical upper body region.

• Lower Zone (Ductile): Slower cooling produces a more ductile microstructure (bainitic or ferritic-bainitic) with lower strength but higher elongation, allowing controlled plastic deformation and energy absorption.

• Transition Zone: A controlled transition between zones ensures gradual property change without sudden property jumps that could create failure points.

Side Crash Performance

This tailored design optimizes side impact protection by:

• Preventing excessive intrusion into the occupant compartment in the upper torso region

• Allowing controlled folding and deformation in the lower section to absorb impact energy

• Distributing crash loads across the B-pillar into the rocker panel and roof rail

• Reducing injury risk to pelvis and thorax in side impact scenarios

Manufacturing Process

The tailored properties are achieved through die design—specifically, separate cooling circuits with different temperatures or flow rates in the upper and lower die sections. This is done in a single die in a single stamping operation, avoiding the cost and complexity of joining multiple parts.

Applications

These B-pillar reinforcements are used in passenger cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles where side impact protection and lightweight design are both priorities. We have experience with programs targeting Euro NCAP, C-NCAP, and IIHS safety ratings.
