Die buttons (also called die buttons or cutting buttons) are precision-made round inserts that serve as the cutting female component in piercing and trimming dies. What Are Die Buttons

A die button is a hardened steel ring or cylinder with a precision-cut hole in the center. When paired with a matching punch, the die button provides the cutting edge on the lower side of the material. As the punch descends through the material, the die button's sharp inner edge shears the material against the punch edge.

Die Button Types

We supply various die button configurations:

• Standard Button: Cylindrical body with precision hole, pressed or retained in the die shoe.

• Shoulder Button: Flanged shoulder for positive location and axial retention.

• Knockout Button: Includes internal knockout pin to eject pierced slugs.

Material and Hardness

Die buttons are available in various materials depending on application:

• D2 / Cr12MoV: Standard cold work steel, through-hardened to 60-62 HRC, good all-around performance.

• SKD11: Premium cold work steel with improved toughness and wear uniformity.

• PM Tool Steels: Powder metallurgy steels for high-volume production of high-strength materials.

• Tungsten Carbide: For very high volume or abrasive materials where maximum wear resistance is required.

Manufacturing Quality

Our die buttons are produced to tight tolerances:

• Hole diameter tolerances held within +0.005 to +0.015 mm depending on size

• Roundness and cylindricity of the hole are tightly controlled for concentric cutting

• Precision ground outer diameter for precise fit in die pockets

• Proper edge break (honing) to prevent chipping on the cutting edge

• Consistent hardness throughout the cross-section
